Structure

1. Leading quiet zone
2. Start character (usually an asterisk [*])
3. One or more pairs of symbol characters that represent data (including an optional check digit)
4. Stop character (usually an asterisk [*])
5. Trailing quiet zone
6. Intercharacter spaces (one module wide) that separate characters within the symbol

Character set

Alpha-numeric (Code 39 also support these characters: Percent sign (%), Plus sign (+), Dollar sign ($), Slash mark (/), Period (.), Hyphen (-))

Capacity

Unlimited (Usually Contains 20 to 23 Alphanumeric Characters)

Error detection

Code 39 is self-detection, a check digit normally isn't necessary.

Error correction

Code 39 does not support error correction

Usage

Code 39 is still widely used, especially in non-retail environments. It is the standard barcode used by the United States Department of Defense and is also used by the Health Industry Bar Code Council (HIBCC).
